PETITIONS

The following 10 petitions, lodged with the Clerk by the Senators indicated, were received:

Senators Peter Baume, Brownhill and Chaney, from 185, 59 and 120 petitioners, respectively, praying that the Senate pass Senator Harradine's Bill to prohibit experiments involving the use of human embryos created by in vitro fertilization.

Senators Ryan and Vigor, from 282 and 89 petitioners, respectively, praying that the further development of the Belconnen Mall, Canberra, include the development of community facilities and the retention of the present child care centre.

Senator Vanstone, from 117 petitioners praying that the proposed cut-back of funding for pre-school and child care services be reversed.

Senator Vanstone, from 264 petitioners praying that the Senate pass the Flags Amendment Bill which provides that the existing Australian National Flag be changed only with the approval of the nation as expressed in a referendum.

Senator Zakharov, from 10 petitioners praying that the Senate urge the Government to propose to the United Nations General Assembly that 1989 be declared International Year for Repairing the Earth and implement related action programs.

Senator Zakharov, from 10 petitioners praying that the Senate request the Government to take steps to prevent the Pacific Area Defence Equipment Exhibition being held in Australia during the 1986 International Year of Peace.

Senator Zakharov, from 10 petitioners praying that the Senate request the Government to re-affirm its obligations to government schools by increasing funds to those schools and by limiting grants of State aid to private schools.
