DISCUSSION OF MATTER OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE

The Deputy-President (Senator Hamer) informed the Senate that Senator Messner had proposed that a matter of public importance be submitted to the Senate for discussion, viz: ''The growing alarm amongst all pensioners, particularly those in rural areas, at the unfair and uneven impact of the assets test legislation''.

And at least 4 Senators having risen in support of the proposed discussion

Time Limits to Speeches: The Manager of Government Business (Senator Grimes) moved-That so much of Standing Order 64 be suspended as would prevent each Senator speaking on the matter of public importance, speaking for not more than 20 minutes.

Question-put and passed.

The Deputy-President called upon Senator Messner to speak.

Discussion ensued.

And the debate having reached the limit of 1 hour allowed by Sessional Order, the business of the day was called on.
