HEALTH LEGISLATION AMENDMENT BILL 1984 (NO. 2) SOCIAL SECURITY AND REPATRIATION LEGISLATION AMENDMENT BILL (NO. 2) 1984

Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion of the Minister for Education and Youth Affairs (Senator Ryan)-That these Bills be now read a second time.

Debate resumed.

Senator Baume moved an amendment, viz: At end of motion, add '', but, in relation to the Health Legislation Amendment Bill 1984 (No. 2), the Senate- (a) is of the opinion that the Bill does not deal adequately with the serious problems faced by the long term sick and elderly caused by the Medicare 35 day rule; and

(b) calls on the Government to withdraw the 35 day rule until proper arrangements have been made to care for patients affected by the rule''.
