CONDOLENCES: Death of Former Senator Francis Patrick McManus, C.M.G

The Leader of the Government (Senator Button) referred to the death, on 28 December 1983, of Francis Patrick McManus, C.M.G., a former Senator for the State of Victoria, and, by leave, moved-That the Senate expresses its deep regret at the death, on 28 December 1983, of Francis Patrick McManus, C.M.G., Senator for the State of Victoria from 1956 to 1962 and from 1965 to 1974 and former Leader and Deputy Leader of the Australian Democratic Labor Party, places on record its appreciation of his long and meritorious public service and tenders its profound sympathy to his family in their bereavement.

The motion was supported by the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Chaney), the Leader of the Australian Democrats (Senator Chipp), the Leader of the National Party of Australia in the Senate (Senator Scott), Senators Sir John Carrick and Harradine.

Death of Former Member, Mr L. G. Wallis: The President informed the Senate of the death, on 10 January 1984, of Mr Laurie George Wallis, a Member of the House of Representatives for the Division of Grey from 1969 to 1980.

The Leader of the Government (Senator Button), the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Chaney) and Senators Haines, Elstob, Jessop and Harradine, by leave, made statements relating thereto.

All Senators present stood, in silence, as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased.

Motion agreed to accordingly.
