CONSTITUTION ALTERATION (DOUBLE DISSOLUTION) BILL 1983

Senator Hamer, pursuant to notice, moved-That leave be given to introduce a Bill for an Act to amend section 57 of the Constitution to provide that a dissolution of both Houses of the Parliament shall not take place by reason that the Senate has twice rejected, failed to pass or unacceptably amended a proposed law, if more than three months has elapsed after the Senate so treated that proposed law.

Question-put and passed.

Bill presented, and on the motion of Senator Hamer read a first time.

Senator Hamer, by leave, moved-That this Bill be now read a second time.

On the motion of the Minister for Veterans' Affairs (Senator Gietzelt) the debate was adjourned.

Ordered-That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.
