KOREAN AIRLINE INCIDENT-MINISTERIAL STATEMENT-RESOLUTION OF SENATE

The Leader of the Government (Senator Button), by leave, made a statement relating to the destruction of a Korean Airlines Boeing 747 by Soviet military aircraft, and moved-That the Senate- (1) Expresses Australia's shock and indignation at the totally unjustified destruction of a Korean Airlines Boeing 747 by Soviet fighter aircraft.

(2) Extends its deepest sympathy to the families of the Australian and other victims.

(3) Calls upon the USSR to give a full, truthful, prompt and appropriately regretful account of this tragic episode.

(4) Urges the international community to take measures to prevent the recurrence of such a tragedy.

(5) Supports the response of the Australian Government as outlined in the foregoing statement.

Debate ensued.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Chaney) moved an amendment, viz: Leave out paragraph (5), insert the following new paragraphs: ''(5) While supporting the response of the Australian Government to date, as outlined in the foregoing statement, requests the Government to formulate further measures that could be taken in the event of the Soviet Union failing to respond to the request in paragraph (3) and to press immediately for just compensation for the families affected by this disaster.

''(6) Condemns the Soviet Union for its barbaric act.''.

Debate continued.

Question-That the words proposed to be left out be left out-put and negatived.

Amendment negatived accordingly.

Question-That the motion be agreed to-put and passed.
