SECURITY AND INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES-ROYAL COMMISSION-MINISTERIAL STATEMENT

The Minister for Social Security (Senator Grimes), by leave, made a statement relating to the terms of reference of the Royal Commission into Security and Intelligence Agencies and moved-That the Senate take note of the Statement.

Debate ensued.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Chaney) moved an amendment, viz: Leave out all words after ''That'', insert ''the Senate is of the opinion that the terms of reference should be amended by leaving out paragraph (c) and inserting the following paragraph: '(c) further to the inquiry in relation to paragraphs (a) and (b) above: (i) all the circumstances, including the actions of the Government, surrounding the expulsion from Australia of Mr Valeriy Nikolayevich Ivanov, First Secretary, Embassy of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and the involvement of Mr Harvey David Mathew Combe in those circumstances; and

(ii) whether or not the Prime Minister, the Special Minister of State or any other Minister or any senior Government adviser disclosed confidential information in any way relating to the decision to expel from Australia Mr Valeriy Nikolayevich Ivanov; and'.''.
