APPROPRIATIONS AND STAFFING-STANDING COMMITTEE-APPOINTMENT

The Minister for Education and Youth Affairs (Senator Ryan), by leave, amended Government Business, Notice of Motion No. 1, standing in the name of the Leader of the Government (Senator Button).

Senator Ryan then, at the request of Senator Button and pursuant to notice, moved- (1) That the Committee known as the Standing Committee on Appropriations and Staffing, constituted by Resolution of the Senate on 25 March 1982, be reconstituted, unless otherwise herein provided, under the same terms, and with the same functions and powers.

(2) That the Committee have power to consider the Minutes of Evidence and records of the Standing Committee on Appropriations and Staffing appointed in the previous session.

(3) That paragraph (4) of the terms of appointment of the Committee, contained in the Resolution of the Senate of 25 March 1982, be varied to read as follows:

''(4) That, unless otherwise ordered, the Committee shall consist of the President and 8 other Senators-the Leader of the Government or such other Senate Minister as may be nominated to represent him from time to time, and 3 other members of the Government to be nominated by the Leader of the Government, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate or such other Senator as may be nominated to represent him from time to time, and 3 other Senators not being members of the Government to be nominated by the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate or by any minority group or groups or independent Senator or independent Senators: provided that, in the absence of agreement between the Opposition and any minority group or groups or independent Senator or independent Senators as to nominations, duly notified to the President, the question as to representation shall be determined by the Senate.''.

(4) That the foregoing provisions of this Resolution, so far as they are inconsistent with the Standing Orders, have effect notwithstanding anything contained in the Standing Orders.
