PETITIONS

The following petition, presented by the Senator indicated, was received and read:

Senator Robertson, on behalf of Senator Georges, from 69 citizens of Australia praying that the Government not legislate for any plant variety rights system which gives exclusive ownership rights over seeds to individuals, organisations or enterprises.

The following petitions, lodged with the Clerk by the Senators indicated, were received:

Senators Primmer and Peter Baume, from 494 and 575 citizens of Australia, respectively, praying that the Senate request the Government to hold a referendum on the question that the entire area of the Great Barrier Reef and its surrounding waters be immediately declared a marine park under the provisions of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975.

Senators McLaren and Jessop, from 50 and 8 citizens of Australia, respectively, praying that the Family Law Act and the Marriage Act be amended to strengthen the institution of marriage.

Senator Reid, from 1190 citizens of Australia praying that the Senate ensure that the question of ownership and control of the Fyshwick and Belconnen markets be referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Australian Capital Territory.

Senator Grimes, from 125 citizens of Australia praying that the Government increase pensions and benefits to at least thirty per cent of the national average weekly male earnings; remove the means and income tests for pensioner health benefits; re-introduce Medibank; and provide $200 million for State housing authorities.

Senators Peter Baume and Collard, from 1633 and 26 citizens of Australia, respectively, praying that the Senate ensure adequate funding for higher education, provide students with adequate financial assistance and oppose the re -introduction of tertiary fees.

Senator Robertson, from 12 citizens of Australia praying that the Government reject any proposal to establish plant breeders' rights in Australia.

Senator Teague, from 25 citizens of Australia praying that the Senate ensure the immediate withdrawal of the Office of Child-Care from the Department of Social Security and the establishment of a Children's Commission.
