Senator Evans gave a Notice of Motion, as follows-That, on the next day of sitting, he would move-That the following matter be referred to the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, for inquiry and report:

The likely fiscal effects, and the effect on the balance of payments, of: (a) the payment over the course of this decade of more than $6 billion, in current money terms, for major items of defence equipment for which the Government has already made firm commitments;

(b) payments over the course of this decade for additional items of major defence equipment for which the Government has not yet made a firm commitment as existing defence capabilities become obsolete or as new capabilities become essential; and

(c) payments over the course of this decade for other defence equipment (as itemised in Division 234/1/04 of the Appropriation Bill (No. 1)1981-82) which is not normally subject to major decisions by Cabinet but which usually amounts to approximately 40 per cent of the total defence equipment vote.
