SOCIAL SERVICES LEGISLATION AMENDMENT BILL 1982

Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question-That this Bill be now read a second time.

Senator Grimes moved an amendment, viz: At end of motion, add '', but the Senate is of the opinion that the Government should- (a) increase family allowances for first and second children, thus removing the disadvantage affecting most Australian families with children; and

(b) provide a system of national compensation to eliminate the excessive costs, delays and uncertainty which exist in the present system''.

Senator Haines moved an amendment to the proposed amendment, viz: Leave out paragraph (b) of the words proposed to be added, insert the following paragraph: ''(b) provide a system of national compensation, as recommended by the Senate Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs, which is designed to eliminate excessive costs, delays and uncertainty of the present system, but which does not incorporate the more extreme proposals of the Woodhouse Report''.

And consideration of Committee Reports taking precedence at 3.30 p.m.-
