ROADS GRANTS AMENDMENT BILL 1982

Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question-That this Bill be now read a second time.

Senator Gietzelt moved an amendment, viz: At end of motion, add '', but the Senate is of the opinion that a substantial supplementary allocation of road grants should be made available to the States, the Northern Territory and local government without delay to-

(a) reduce the backlog of established roads needs;

(b) accelerate the rate of road construction and maintenance works;

(c) improve the efficiency of road transport services;

(d) reduce the incidence of road deaths and injuries; and

(e) assist local government bodies to meet road funding difficulties''.

On the motion of the Minister for Veterans' Affairs (Senator Messner) the debate was adjourned.

Ordered-That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for a later hour of the day.
