DISCUSSION OF MATTER OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE

The President informed the Senate that Senator Reid had proposed that a matter of public importance be submitted to the Senate for discussion, viz: ''The effect on Australia of the crisis in the New South Wales electricity supply system; its causes, its nature and its consequences''.

The President further stated that he had also received a letter from the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Button) advising that he proposed that a matter of public importance be submitted to the Senate for discussion.

As Senator Reid's letter was the first received, the President stated that, in accordance with Standing Order 64, he proposed to call Senator Reid.

And at least four Senators having risen in support of the proposed discussion-

The President called upon Senator Reid to speak.

Discussion ensued.

Ordered-That the business of the day be called on.
