DISCUSSION OF MATTER OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE

The President informed the Senate that Senator Peter Rae had proposed that a matter of public importance be submitted to the Senate for discussion, viz: ""To bring about better government in Australia, the necessity for the Parliament to address itself to the real issues raised by the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Government Operations on the Australian Dairy Corporation, such as:

(a) the nature of the administration of the Department of Primary Industry; (b) the relationship between Ministers and Statutory Authorities;

(c) the accountability of Statutory Authorities and their subsidiaries to the Parliament and to the Government; and

(d) the future of Asia Dairy Industries and the Dairy Industry Stabilisation Fund.''.

And at least four Senators having risen in support of the proposed discussion--

The President called upon Senator Peter Rae to speak.

Discussion ensued.

Ordered--That the business of the day be called on.
