19    Discussion of Matter of Public Importance—Immigration—Refugee Intake From Syria

The Deputy President (Senator Marshall) informed the Senate that, at 8.30 am today, Senator Siewert and Senator Moore had each submitted a letter in accordance with standing order 75 proposing a matter of public importance for discussion. The question of which proposal would be submitted to the Senate was determined by lot.

As a result, the Deputy President informed the Senate that Senator Siewert had proposed that the following matter of public importance be submitted to the Senate for discussion:

The Abbott Government’s failure to commit to the intake of an additional 20 000 refugees from Syria, despite escalating conflict and all-time high levels of human displacement.

The proposal was supported by four senators and the matter was discussed.
