Senator TROETH (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) (1:07 PM) —Over the past 10 years, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Native Title and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Land Fund has played a significant role in providing appropriate parliamentary monitoring and oversight of the native title system. In extending the existing sunset provision for the committee by a further two years, the Extension of Sunset of Parliamentary Joint Committee on Native Title Bill 2004 recognises the value of the work performed by the committee and will ensure that the committee is able to continue to play this role into the future. I thank senators in the chamber for their support for this legislation. The government will be supporting the Democrat amendment, and I commend the bill to the chamber.
