(Question No. 1624)

Senator Margetts asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 23 August 1994:

  (1) Please provide the exact dates of the Kangaroo `95 defence exercises.

  (2) How many Indonesian troops and Australian troops will take part in the exercises, and give a breakdown of their roles.

  (3) Please provide details of the geographical area the Kangaroo `95 exercises will cover.

Senator Robert Ray —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  (1) Exercise Kangaroo `95 will begin on 15 January and conclude on 25 August 1995. The period during which troops will be deployed in the field will be 1 to 25 August.

  (2) There will be approximately 12500 members of the Australian Defence Force involved in Kangaroo `95. The Indonesian Government has yet to respond to the invitation to participate in Kangaroo `95. The role of all forces deployed during Kangaroo `95 will be to train for the conduct of short warning conflict in northern Australia and its maritime approaches.

  (3) The declared exercise area for Kangaroo `95 can be described by drawing a line from Broome in the west, through Tennant Creek to Cairns in the east. The area north of that line, out to and including the Australian Fishing Zone, will constitute the exercise area.
