Senator GARETH EVANS (Leader of the Government in the Senate) —by leave—I inform the Senate that the Minister for Defence, Senator Ray, is attending the five-power defence arrangements ministers conference in Malaysia and Singapore. He will return on the morning of Thursday, 22 September and will be attending question time on that day. In his absence I will take questions relating to the defence portfolio and Senator McMullan will represent the Minister for Industrial Relations and the Minister for Tourism.

  Senator Cook is absent on sick leave for at least today and tomorrow. Senator Schacht will take questions on Industry, Science and Technology, and Senator McMullan will represent the Treasurer and the Minister for Finance.

  I also inform the Senate that the Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, Senator Bolkus, is overseas on official business until 24 September visiting various countries in the Middle East following on from his attendance at the Cairo conference on population and development. He will return on 25 September. During his absence I will take questions relating to the Attorney-General's portfolio and Senator Faulkner will take questions relating to Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, and Housing and Regional Development.
