Senator GARETH EVANS —In answer to Senator Hill yesterday, at one point I referred to the Remuneration Tribunal being headed by a judge. For the sake of accuracy and the record, I inform the Senate that, of course, while there used to be a requirement that the head of the tribunal be a judge—and the Senate will recall that for the first 20 years of its life, between 1973 and 1992, it was headed successively by Sir Walter Campbell and Mr Justice Mahoney—that requirement was removed in June 1992 by a change in the legislation. Since February 1993 the president of the tribunal has been the equally distinguished academic and former public servant, Professor Stuart Harris.
