Senator PATTERSON (6.04 p.m.) —I want the minister to reclarify something. As the legislation currently exists, those lists could be amended by the Senate. My understanding of what the minister has just said to Senator Harradine is that, if we were to pass these amendments today, things could be amended just as they can be now.

Senator Sherry —Yes, I am informed that that is the case.

Senator PATTERSON —I have just sought advice from the Deputy Clerk and there is some doubt. It may be because I have not explained it properly. As I said I have been taking this through for Senator Herron and was given responsibility only last night. I would like the minister to have this confirmed by somebody. I do not doubt the advisers in the box, but I do not want to let this go through with the minister giving Senator Harradine that information.

I said to Senator Harradine that if he was concerned about this I am prepared to move that we report progress and have a look at that. It would have been nice to have been able to discuss it a bit earlier. I had a discussion with Senator Lees and she would be prepared to do the same thing. I just want to give the minister time to find out whether what he said before is actually correct or whether he wants an opportunity to correct that if necessary.
