Senator BOLKUS (Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Multicultural Affairs) (4.55 p.m.) —I think at this stage there is not much more to reply to, having taken on board the points of Senator Vanstone and Senator Spindler. I accept why Senator Spindler, in good sense, is not proceeding with the amendment—that, of course, being that we have reached an agreement with New Zealand. Ultimately, hopefully we can get to a situation where the concept of family proceedings is in fact excluded totally from the bill. That would mean that the sort of concern Senator Spindler has now will no longer be relevant. I do not think there is any more that needs to be said in summing up at this particular stage.

  Question resolved in the affirmative.

Bills read a second time, and passed through their remaining stages without amendment or debate.
