Senator HILL (Leader of the Opposition) (12.45 p.m.) —The coalition is supporting the Australian Trade Commission Amendment Bill 1994. Very briefly, it implements changes to the parent act consistent with the amendments to the Industrial Relations Act 1988. The bill removes the age restriction on the appointment of part-time members to the board of the Australian Trade Commission. The effect of the bill is that part-time members may be appointed to the board after attaining the age of 65 years or for a term to expire after a member attains the age of 65 years. This strikes a blow against the evils of ageism. We on this side of the chamber do not believe that somebody who has attained that age has necessarily lost the faculties needed to do a good job. We are therefore pleased to support this legislation.
