Senator IAN MACDONALD (12.01 p.m.) —I indicate, as I did during my contribution to the second reading debate on the National Environment Protection Council Bill, that the coalition will support the government, notwithstanding that our amendment was not accepted. I comment in passing that Senator Coulter's actions in the last couple of days and those of the party that he represents have been quite extraordinary. One of the reasons for being of this group was to look after the environment. We had the extraordinary situation yesterday when the Democrats avoided their longstanding commitment to a ban on uranium mining and supported uranium mining in three mines. I found that quite extraordinary. Here they are today, voting against a bill which, as imperfect as it might be, still does something to enhance protection of the environment. I make the comment in passing that I am amused by the actions of the Democrats in the last couple of days.
