To the Honourable the President and the Members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:

The petition of the undersigned residents of Australia draws to the attention of the Senate that the Adult Migrant English Program (AMES), must continue as a fully Government funded educational program with equality of access for all non-English speaking permanent residents. This involves the maintenance of a Western Region English Language Centre, servicing the needs of new Australians living in this area.

The Pennington English Centre has over the past twenty years provided a quality service enabling thousands of new migrants and refugees to successfully integrate into the Australian community through the acquisition of the English language. Unfortunately due to lack of DIEA funding this crucial service is now to be cut. This will impact adversely not only on the local Western Community and its residents but on the Australian society as a whole.

We would ask that the Government reconsiders its decision to close the Western Region English Centre and provides the necessary funding and support for the establishing of a new Western Region Centre.
