To the Honourable the President and Members of the Senate in Parliament assembled.

  The petition of the undersigned respectfully showeth:

1.Concern at the fact that genital mutilation of girls is occurring in Australia;

2.Concern that the likelihood of a woman facing discrimination on the grounds of sex if she return to her country of origin is not considered to be sufficient reason for granting a woman refugee status.

  Your petitioners pray that the Senate in the Parliament assembled should, together with the House of Representatives:

1.Classify genital mutilation as an illegal activity;

2.Follow the March 1993 decision of the Canadian Government and allow potential "discrimination on the grounds of sex" to be sufficient reason for granting refugee status to women who would otherwise be required to return to their country of origin.
