(Question No. 1516)

Senator Reid asked the Minister representing the Minister for Human Services and Health, upon notice, on 29 June 1994:

  (1) With reference to the issue of breast cancer funding for the Australian Capital Territory in the 1994-95 Federal Budget:

  (1) Was the original figure announced in the 1994-95 Budget of $599,000 correct.

  (2) Has this amount now been changed; if so, when did the change occur.

  (3) At whose instigation was the figure revised.

  (4) What assurance do the People of the Australian Capital Territory have that their allocation for breast cancer funding in the future will not be reduced as the figure announced in the May budget suggested.

Senator Crowley —The Minister for Human Services and Health has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) No, the figure was a misprint. The correct figure for the ACT in 1994-95 is $887,789.

  (2) The Department advised Treasury and ACT Health of the correct figure the day following the Budget announcement.

  (3) The misprint was corrected by staff in the Breast Cancer Screening Section of the Department immediately.

  (4) The Commonwealth has allocated the correct total amount in the 1994-95 budget. The figures for the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory were transposed.

It is in the public health interests of the Program that the target number of women in each State and Territory is screened each year. Numbers of women screened and appropriate funding are interdependent, and funding will only be reduced if the Australian Capital Territory does not screen the agreed numbers.
