(Question No. 1504)

Senator Calvert asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 29 June 1994:

  (1) What type of training videos were purchased by Human Resources and Management, Training and Development, from Seven Dimensions Pty Ltd, South Yarra, Victoria, at a cost of $44 800 and $45 270.

  (2) Where will these videos be used.

  (3) How many videos were purchased.

  (4) Who will use the videos.

  (5) Have they been used; if so, has any improvement been noticed in the trainees.

Senator Robert Ray —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1)&(3) Training and Development Branch, Human Resources and Management Division, has purchased eight sets of `People Skills' videos from Seven Dimensions Pty Ltd. `People Skills' is a set of 20 modules designed to develop all aspects of communication skills, covering personal effectiveness, team skills, core communication skills, leadership and handling difficult situations. One set was purchased in October 1993 at a cost of $8 000 for use by participants on the Department's Graduate Development Program. Seven more sets were purchased in May 1994, at a cost of $45 270, for use by the training areas in each of the regions. (The entry of $44 800 in the Purchasing and Disposals Gazette No. 21 of 1 June 1994 was an incorrect entry and should have been deleted before publication. The correct entry is the one, also in Gazette No. 21, for $45 270; that is, the total cost of the seven sets of videos was $45 270.)

(2)&(4) The videos will be used by training providers both centrally and in the regions within a Defence Organisation employing in excess of 20 000 civilian staff.

  (5) The videos purchased in October 1993 have been used as part of relevant courses held in Canberra and were borrowed for regional training purposes. Due to the positive feedback from trainers and course participants about the videos, sets were provided to the regional training areas in May 1994 and have been used to date for relevant courses by five regions. The remaining two regions (Perth and Darwin) have courses scheduled during which the videos will be used. Trainers and trainees have found the videos make a valuable contribution to courses covering communication and people skills.
