(Question No. 1472)

Senator Bell asked the Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories, upon notice, on 10 June 1994:

  (1) Will the Department identify areas to be excluded from the 1994 woodchip export licences; if so what process will be put in place to carry out this commitment.

  (2) Will environment groups have an opportunity to submit a list of areas to be excluded.

Senator Faulkner —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  (1) The 1994 woodchip export licences were issued by the previous Minister for Resources in December of last year. A number of areas were excluded from these licences following advice from the previous Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories. My Department and the Department of Primary Industries and Energy are holding discussions on how the advice prepared by my Department can be better taken into account when future woodchip licences are issued.

  (2) Yes. I have invited conservation groups to submit to my Department areas which they consider to be of high conservation value and which they consider should be excluded from logging pending establishment of a comprehensive, adequate and representative reserve system.
