Senator MacGIBBON (3.31 p.m.) —I move:

That the Senate take note of the answer given by the Minister for Foreign Affairs (Senator Gareth Evans), to a question without notice asked by Senator MacGibbon this day, relating to the presence of Australian troops in Somalia.

I have a great concern about the reason why we still have Australian troops in Somalia, and that concern was heightened by the answer we got today from the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Gareth Evans. Why do we have Australian troops in Somalia? It is not correct to say, as the minister did, that we only commit troops under a political plan when we are involved in peacekeeping. The use of military forces on all occasions should have a realistic political objective.

The ACTING PRESIDENT (Senator Chapman)—Order! The time for this debate has expired.

  Question resolved in the affirmative.
