(Question No. 1503)

Senator Calvert asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 29 June 1994:

  (1) What type of outdoor furniture was purchased by SASR Campbell Barracks, Swanbourne, DUF Cell Base Squadron at a cost of $13 992 from Active Industries, Joplin WA.

  (2) Where is this furniture to be used.

  (3) Who is the furniture to be used by.

  (4) Is the furniture Australian made; if not, why not.

Senator Robert Ray —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  (1) Frankland 8 seater type setting made from timber. The furniture was purchased under Block Scale Entitlements 11/01, 11/02 and 11/03 for unit messes.

  (2) In the outdoor dining areas of the SASR Soldiers', Sergeants' and Officers' messes.

  (3) The furniture is used on a daily basis by all ranks of the SASR, including civil and military personnel, and visitors to the unit.

  (4) Yes. It should also be noted that Active Industries, Joplin WA, is a sheltered workshop employing disabled people.
