(Question No. 1465)

Senator Chamarette asked the Minister representing the Minister for Human Services and Health, upon notice, on 8 June 1994:

  (1) How many people receive the Domiciliary Nursing Care Benefit.

  (2) What is the average payment.

  (3) What is the administration cost of this scheme.

Senator Crowley —The Minister for Human Services and Health has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) As at 20 May 1994 there were 37,167 beneficiaries caring for 37,634 patients (a carer can care for up to two patients).

  (2) The current fortnightly payment is $53.20 per fortnight.

  (3) Information regarding the overall administration cost of the Benefit is not readily available because duties associated with the Domiciliary Nursing Care Benefit form only a component of the responsibilities of the staff involved. There are 35.5 ASL administrative staff and 10 nursing officers (full-time equivalent) in the Central, State and Territory Offices.
