(Question No. 1454)


Senator Campbell asked the Minister representing the Minister for Communications and the Arts, upon notice, on 7 June 1994:

  (1) How many square metres of office space are either leased, owned or occupied by the department and its agencies.

  (2) What is the breakdown by State or Territory, and by department and agency, by State or Territory.

  (3) How many department and agency employees occupy the office space.

  (4) What is the breakdown by State or Territory, and by department and agency, by State or Territory.

  (5) Does the department lease or own any office space which is not currently occupied by staff; if so, please supply details of: (a) whether the office space is leased or owned; (b)whether it is leased/owned by the department or one of its agencies; (c) how many square metres are involved and the location of the office space (please specify whether details of these office space properties are included in the answers to any of the above questions).


Senator McMullan —The Minister for Communications and the Arts has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  Considerable effort would be required to compile the information sought for all portfolio agencies. The following information relates to the area occupied by the Department during 1993/94.

  (1) The Department of Communications and the Arts has control of 16,756 square metres of office space Australia wide as at 7 June 1994. This figure includes the office accommodation associated with the special purpose facilities occupied by the Australian Archives and Art Bank.

  (2) The break-up of office space by State and territory is:

    NSW—1598m(2)

    Victoria—1520m(2)

    Queensland—415m(2)

    South Australia—317m(2)

    Western Australia—321m(2)

    Tasmania—234m(2)

    ACT—12,218m(2)

    Northern Territory—133m(2)

  (3) The Department had, as at June 1994, 833 personnel occupying these premises.

  (4) The breakdown of employees by State and Territory is:

    NSW—67

    Victoria—48

    Queensland—22

    South Australia—15

    Western Australia—15

    Tasmania—11

    ACT—648

    Northern Territory—7

  (5)(a)-(c) The Australian Archives leases 682 square metres of office space which is not currently occupied by staff. This comprises:

  436 square metres in 24 Market St Sydney where the NSW Region Office has relocated to alternate premises. The lease for the vacant space expires on 31 October 1994, and

  246 square metres in 215 Adelaide Street Brisbane following the rationalisation of the Brisbane Office and its incorporation into alternative premises. The lease of the vacant space expires on 31 July 1994.

  The Australian Archives also has 670 square metres of accommodation in owned premises at 95 Outer Crescent, Brighton, Victoria which is vacant following the opening of a new Repository.
