Senator Parer asked the Minister representing the Attorney-General, upon notice, on 17 March 1994:

  (1) What journalist services does Mr Richard Upton provide to the department.

  (2) When did Mr Upton commence providing services to the department.

  (3) When is the provision of journalist services by Mr Upton scheduled to end.

  (4) What is the estimated total cost of the provision of services by Mr Upton.

  (5) How much has the department paid Mr Upton to date.

  (6) Who authorised the arrangement with Mr Upton.


Senator Bolkus —The Attorney-General has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) Mr Upton was contracted to provide the following journalist services to the Department:

  Undertake the production and marketing of the Information Technology (IT) Support Group's publications, including The LANE, Fast LANE and LOIS Stop Press which are distributed to most departmental staff across Australia;

  Write and edit feature articles for inclusion in the IT Support Group's publications in conjunction with the IT Support Group's technical staff;

  Quality assure materials prepared by technical staff or the LOIS Contractor for ease of readability to those who will be utilising the technology; and

  Assist with the preparation of Legal Office Information System (LOIS) Manuals.

  (2) November 1992.

  (3) Ceased February 1994.

  (4) $79,062.
