Senator BOLKUS (Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Multicultural Affairs) (6.44 p.m.) —It is my understanding that we have to complete this session at 6.50 p.m. this evening. That gives me a chance overnight to focus on the `mays' and the `shalls' and the criminal and civil penalties and try to come up with a formula which has greater consistency.

The TEMPORARY CHAIRMAN (Senator Colston)—I understand that Senator Spindler has an amendment. Perhaps we could have a motion that the amendments that have been moved be postponed until after consideration of Senator Spindler's amendment.

Senator BOLKUS (Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Multicultural Affairs) (6.44 p.m.) —I move:

That further consideration of the amendments be postponed.

This is an inquiry with respect to proposed new subclause 26A. Perhaps we could defer consideration of all government amendments. I understand that does not cause any problems with Senator Spindler's amendments.

  Question resolved in the affirmative.
