Senator Calvert asked the Minister representing the Minister for Social Security, upon notice, on 6 June 1994:

  (1) What type of screen printed T-shirts were purchased by the department for $4,242.50 from Goldform Leisureware Pty Ltd, Slacks Creek, Qld.

  (2) Why were these T-shirts purchased.

  (3) How many T-shirts were purchased.

  (4) Were the T-shirts Australian made; if not why not.

  (5) For what promotional exercise were these T-shirts used.

  (6) Who received the T-shirts.

  (7) In the 1992-93 financial year, and the 1993-94 financial year to date, what amount has been spent on promotional activities and aids by the department.


Senator Crowley —The Minister for Social Security has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) The T-shirts were of plain white cotton with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander motif.

  (2) The T-shirts were purchased to attract the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander client group to the department's outreach activities.

  (3) 300

  (4) Yes

  (5) To attract the client group to seminars, displays and other outreach activities conducted by DSS staff during the International Year of the World's Indigenous People. They have since been used for other information displays and seminars conducted by the department.

  (6) The T-shirts are for loan to staff of the department when representing the department.

  (7) 1992-93: $377,895; 1993-94: $32,573 (at 16/6/94)

  A large number of promotional activities were undertaken at the local level in 1992-93 in respect of the International Year of the World's Indigenous People. Expenditure on these activities is included in the above figure.
