Senator SHERRY (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy) (9.17 p.m.) —The principle that farmers should be represented on the advisory committee is sound. It is certainly this government's intention that farmers would always be represented on the advisory committee.

There is a good reason for not naming farmers in the act, however. If farmers are named, the producers who are nursery persons are omitted because a nursery person is not a farmer. Considering the size of the nursery industry—and I understand it is also represented on this advisory committee at the present time—and the fact that it is a very major user, it should be represented. It would be very unwise and not in the national interest to include the word `farmers' and exclude another categories of persons who should be honoured. For that reason, we do not support the amendment.
