Senator ROBERT RAY (Minister for Defence) (10.27 p.m.) —The government does not support the proposed amendments. The proposed amendments would increase the amount of compensation that the court can award. They would allow dismissed non-award employees of high incomes to claim six months remuneration as compensation. For senior executives this would be several times the government's limit of $30,000 for non-award employees. I am not going to interfere with the debate between the Australian Democrats and the Liberals about this, other than to say I am pleased about it.

  Question put:

That the amendments (Senator Bell's) be agreed to.
