Senator SPINDLER —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

    (i)the role that military expenditure has played in exacerbating Third World poverty, perpetuating civil war, entrenching political repression and creating a world refugee population of over 20 million, and

    (ii)the recent instances of Australian exports approvals being given by the Government for sales of arms to countries such as Iraq, Somalia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Indonesia and Pakistan where Governments have been involved in civil wars, are on the verge of war with neighbouring countries or are guilty of serious human rights abuses including the murdering of their own citizens;

  (b)deplores the continued endeavours of the Government to foster a defence industry with an export capability;

  (c)expresses its abhorrence of the fact that the Government has scheduled the Defence Procurement `94 Conference in Canberra during National Refugee Week; and

  (d)congratulates those demonstrators who, by their protests outside the conference on 22 June 1994, highlighted the obscenity of the international arms trade.
