Senator CHAMARETTE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—


    (i)with concern, the reports of high rates of infant and child mortality in Iraq since the end of the Gulf War, and

    (ii)that leading international observers and commentators have linked this increase in mortality to the non-military sanctions imposed by the international community on Iraq; and

  (b)calls on the Australian Government to work with the international community to assess whether the sanctions are achieving their objectives and modify the sanctions so as to minimise the negative effect on the Iraqi civilian population.
