Senator Ellison asked the Minister representing the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, upon notice, on 7 June 1994:

  (1) Which groups have been appointed representative bodies pursuant to section 202 of the Native Title Act 1993 for the State of Western Australia;

if so, which bodies have applied, and when is a decision as to their application likely.

  (2) Are there any applications pending by any bodies to be determined representative bodies of the Native Title Act 1993; if so, which bodies' applications are pending, and when is a decision as to their application likely.


Senator Collins —The Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs has provided the following information in response to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) The Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs has determined fourteen organisations to be Representative Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Bodies.

  Of the fourteen, four are based in Western Australia, namely: the Kimberley Land Council; the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia; the Ngaanyatjarra Council; and the Western Desert Puntukurnuparna.

  (2) An application has been received from the Pilbara Land Council to be determined as a Representative Body. The Minister is awaiting the advice of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission on the application, which is expected by the end of June 1994.
