(Question No. 1361)


Senator Patterson asked the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, upon notice, on 3 May 1994:

  For each of the boards, councils and committees to which the Minister has the power to appoint members, and for all of these combined:

  (1) How many positions were available for appointment on 21 August 1988 and how many are now available.

  (2) How many of these positions were held by women on 21 August 1988 and how many are now held by women.

  (3) What changes do the resulting proportions represent since the Labor Caucus motion.


Senator Faulkner —The Minister for Veterans' Affairs has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON THE VIETNAM VETERANS COUNSELLING SERVICE

  (1) On 21 August 1988 there were six positions and, at present, there are six positions.

  (2) On 21 August 1988 no members were women and, at present, no members are women.

  (3) There has been no change since the Labor Caucus motion.

THE REPATRIATION PHARMACEUTICAL REFERENCE COMMITTEE

  (1) On 21 August 1988 there were 12 positions and, at present, there are 12 positions.

  (2) On 21 August 1988 no members were women and, at present, one member is a woman. This member attended her first meeting of the Committee on 29 April 1994 as a representative of the RSL. In addition one woman also held a position on this Committee between January 1989 and April 1992. This appointment is not reflected in the figures provided for this response.

  (3) The current change represents a move from 0% to 8.33% in female representation on the Committee since the Labor Caucus motion.

MINISTERIAL ADVISORY COUNCIL ON VETERANS' ISSUES

  (1) On 21 August 1988 there were no positions available for appointment as this Council was not established until 1 October 1993. At present there are 11 positions.

  (2) On 21 August 1988 no members were women as this Council was not established until 1 October 1993. At present three members are women.

  (3) The female representation on this Council is 27.3%

  For all these combined:

  (1) On 21 August 1988 there were 18 positions available for appointment and, at present, there are 29 positions.

  (2) On 21 August 1988 no members were women and, at present, 4 members are women. In addition one woman held a position on the Repatriation Pharmaceutical Reference Committee between January 1989 and April 1992 and another on the now expired Veterans' Compensation Review Committee between August 1993 and March 1994. Neither of these two appointments are reflected in the figures provided for this response.

  (3) The current change represents a move of 0% to 13.8% in female representation on Committees and Councils since the Labor Caucus motion.
