Senator SPINDLER (6.10 p.m.) —I am grateful that the opposition concurs that the car industry is important, but I regret that it is not prepared to follow through with action. I wonder how the opposition and the government for that matter intend to obtain an independent information base and advice on the developments that should be undertaken in the car industry, how these should be focused and how they should be brought into this chamber other than by a report of the minister as part of his general responsibilities in this chamber. The opposition exhibits confidence in the minister which I cannot share. I would have thought that the principle of an independent information base, even though it has to be tabled by the minister, is an important one which should have been observed on this occasion.
