Senator CHAMARETTE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

  (a)condemns:

    (i)the commencement of construction of the Kuranda Sky-Rail in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area in far north Queensland, and

    (ii)the fact that the area chosen to start the project was the clearing of the most environmentally-sensitive tower sites along the route of the sky-rail;

  (b)notes that:

    (i)the Commonwealth Government has failed to exercise its responsibilities under the World Heritage Properties Conservation Act 1983, and

    (ii)that local community groups opposed to the development have vowed to continue the campaign to stop the development and have appealed for people to help them; and

  (c)calls on the Commonwealth Government to immediately intervene to stop the development.
