Senator KERNOT (Leader of the Australian Democrats) —Mr Acting Deputy President, I seek leave to make a personal explanation as I claim to have been misrepresented by Senator Loosley.

  Leave granted.

Senator KERNOT —In his remarks, Senator Loosley said that I had sat down with the coalition and worked out a deal which said, `If you bag Keating, we will support all your proposals on the Foreign Investment Review Board.' I categorically deny that. Senator Loosley makes the mistake of applying the sort of grubby deal-doing view of the world in which he lives to the way I might view my role in the process. He is absolutely wrong. This has been the only opportunity we have had in recent times to look at the role of the Foreign Investment Review Board in a constructive way. I have listened to the evidence, and the evidence has been damning. There has never at any stage been one conversation between me and the coalition about what the outcomes of this committee inquiry would be. I make up my own mind, and the evidence was damning.
