Senator JONES —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the time for the presentation of the report of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade on sexual harassment in the Australian Defence Force be extended to 25 August 1994.

I seek leave to make a brief statement in relation to the notice of motion for an extension of time.

  Leave granted.

Senator JONES —The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade is currently finalising its report on sexual harassment in the Australian Defence Force, a matter that the Senate referred to the committee for inquiry on 29 September 1993. The report deals with important issues of principle and sensitive matters affecting the lives of many individuals.

Since the beginning of the inquiry the committee has sifted through a large quantity of evidence. Many issues have been taken up with the witnesses at public hearings and, in several cases, these issues have been the subject of further correspondence with witnesses. Some facts central to the inquiry have emerged only very recently. Some responses are still outstanding and some matters have emerged only in recent days, needing further follow-up.

In order to take full account of the evidence still outstanding and to ensure that all issues are adequately addressed in the report, the committee believes that it is necessary to seek a further extension, which I have just sought.
