Senator Bell asked the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, upon notice, on 12 May 1994:

  Have organochlorine pesticides been imported into Australia in the past two years; if so: (a) which organochlorine pesticides have been imported; and (b) what quantities of each have been imported.


Senator Collins —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  Of the organochlorine chemicals covered by Schedule 9 of the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations, in the last two years technical chlordane, heptachlor and lindane have been imported into Australia for formulation into pesticide products.

  The total amounts of each are: chlordane 43 tonnes; heptachlor 808 tonnes; lindane 2 tonnes.
