(Question No. 1334)

Senator Bell asked the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, upon notice, on 3 May 1994:

  (1) Does the National Registration Authority (NRA) have information about the leak of toxic chemicals from the pyrethrin plant near Scottsdale in Tasmania; if so, how was this information obtained; if not, which authority has, or should have, information about the processes and practices involved in the manufacture of such chemicals.

  (2) Will the NRA establish and maintain records of the sites where such spills occur; if so, will these records be available for public scrutiny; if not, should any other authority be responsible for compiling such records.

Senator Collins —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  (1) & (2) I have been advised by the NRA that it does not have information about the leak of toxic chemicals from the plant mentioned, nor does it maintain records of such occurrences.

Such matters, except where they occur on Commonwealth land, are the responsibility of the appropriate State or Territory government and the question would be best directed to environmental authorities in Tasmania.
