Senator Calvert asked the Minister representing the Minister for Transport and the Minister for Communications and the Arts, upon notice, on 6 December 1993:

  (1) What conference facilities have been hired by the department during the 1991-92 and 1992-93 financial years and the 1993-94 financial year to date, and why.

  (2) What are the costs associated with the hiring of these conference facilities.

  (3) What have these costs covered.

  (4) How many people have attended the conferences organised at each conference facility.

  (5) What costs have been involved in staff attending these conference, including accommodation, travel and any incidental costs.


Senator McMullan —The Minister for Transport has provided the following information on behalf of the former Department of Transport and Communications. The Minister for Communications and the Arts has provided information on the cultural development components:

  Several sub-programs within the Department used conference facilities apart from those owned by the Department during the three financial years referred to. In many cases facilities were hired for training and development purposes. On some occasions conferences were attended by Departmental staff and trainers. On other occasions conferences included industry representatives and overseas delegates.

  Unless otherwise indicated, all conference facilities hired were in Canberra. The recording systems in use in the Department do not collect cost information in a form that is readily applicable to a particular conference activity. Considerable effort would be required and I am not prepared to authorise the use of resources in this manner.
