Senator ROBERT RAY (Minister for Defence) (5.06 p.m.) —The only point I want to make about future ministers is that we understand that this body has about 15 months to run, so it would be a rather extraordinary thing—

Senator Crane —Laurie might be struggling to make it.

Senator ROBERT RAY —Changes do occur. We saw that last week; we saw all sorts of changes. Even with 32 frontbenchers the opposition cannot get a frontbencher to lead on this subject. I am a bit puzzled about that. Senator Crane does it adequately; I am not trying to denigrate him in that remark. With 15 months to run, I think it is a bit of a long bow he is now starting to pull on this issue as though there will be a change of ministers, for some reason a purge of the board and then, as it is in its last few months, there will be the big stacking exercise to achieve what? It will be basically an administrative job. It really is taking paranoia a bit too far.

  Question put:

That the amendment (Senator Crane's) be agreed to.
