Senator CROWLEY (Minister for Family Services) (11.55 a.m.) —I thank honourable senators for their contributions, at least in large part. I certainly do not begrudge my colleagues in opposition wanting to say, `We are the champions because we did it.' That is a perfectly reasonable point for them to make, particularly in light of the requirements of this legislation.

A number of points have been raised about HECS. It would probably be a good idea to take note of those comments and have them taken up in the bill pertaining to that matter which will be introduced in this current session.

Senator Teague —And the Attorney-General's advice?

Senator CROWLEY —I am advised by officers that the request to see the Attorney-General's advice has been accepted and that the advice will be provided through the minister's office.

  Question resolved in the affirmative.

Bill read a second time, and passed through its remaining stages without amendment or debate.
